Australian airline Qantas has announced that it will launch nonstop commercial flights between Sydney and New York from mid-2028 as part of its Project Sunrise programme. The service will become the first nonstop commercial air link between Australia and New York.
The flight is expected to take around 18 hours, reducing the current journey time with a stopover by approximately three hours. Ticket sales for the Sydney-New York route are scheduled to begin in August 2027.
Under Project Sunrise, Qantas will first launch nonstop Sydney-London flights in October 2027. Sydney-New York will be the second route announced under the programme.
The flights will be operated by specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft. Equipped with an additional 20,000-litre fuel tank, the aircraft will offer a range of more than 16,000 kilometres and the capability to operate nonstop flights of up to 22 hours. Qantas’ Project Sunrise fleet will consist of 12 A350-1000ULRs configured with 238 seats.
